Greg Kelsey (UIUC Math)Using self-similar groups to find Thurston obstructionsAbstract: Abstract: Recently, Bartholdi and Nekrashevych developed a connection between the theory of self-similar groups and the theory of topological polynomials and their Thurston obstructions. This connection can be utilized to give a new proof of the obstruction of some topological polynomials. This method produces a variety of examples of obstructed topological polynomials.

Jeremy Rouse (UIUC Math)The index of the Hecke algebra in weight 4Abstract: We will discuss the power of p dividing the index of the Hecke algebra of cusp forms of weight 4 and level p. In particular, we will give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Hecke eigenform to be congruent to another eigenform mod p. This is joint work with Scott Ahlgren.
