Tracy Grauman (athenaHealth)
Steps towards a career path
Abstract: Tracy Grauman graduated from UIUC in 2008 with a Masters in Computer Science and now works at athenaHealth, which develops internet-based business services for physician practices. She will be speaking to us about how her graduate experience prepared her for a non-academic job. She plans to highlight differences she found among companies during her job search, describe various positions at a tech company that mathematically-minded people would enjoy, and shed light on the black box that is "industry". She will also talk about her work at athenaHealth. If you are curious about what your graduate degree prepares you for and how to market yourself to a non-academic employer, please join us! The talk will be accessible to any level; even if you are not thinking about a job search yet, you could learn something.

Kelly Funk (UIUC Math)
Continuous and Smooth Realizations of Ergodic Transformations of Finite Entropy
Abstract: In 1978 Lind and Thouvenot proved that every finite entropy ergodic transformation is isomorphic to a Lebesgue measure-preserving homeomorphism of T2. During their proof they also arrive at an isomorphism with a measure preserving diffeomorphism of T2, however it does not necessarily preserve Lebesgue measure. The diffeomorphism preserves an Oxtoby-Ulam measure. Joseph Rosenblatt and I are considering continuous and smooth representations of weakly-mixing, rigid transformations on T2.
