Matthew Ando (Department of Mathematics, University of Illinois)Degree and IntersectionAbstract: One of the simplest and oldest invariants in topology is the "degree", and I'll give one simple explanation of this invariant. Intersection theory is the study of another large class of topological invariants, with wide applicability. I'll introduce this theory, and explain a construction of Thom which brings intersection theory and degree theory together.
