The ISAMA'99 conference on Math, Art and Architecture,
was held in San Sebastián, Spain, the
home of the sculptor Eduardo Chillida.
We had an excursion to the new Guggenheim Museum
in Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry.
There was a special exhibit of Chillida,
including his "Homage to Calder".
We also visited Chillida's private collection; his son demonstrated
for us how to reassemble one sculpture in the form of a 3D puzzle.
The newer cathedral in San Sebastián has an alabaster
cross by Chillida over the main entrance.
San Sebastián is also the site of Chillida's famous
wind combs, metal sculptures installed in the rocks by the sea.
These shapes are often used as symbols of the Basque Country,
as on an electioneering car of Euskal Herritarok.
