In the northwest corner of Portugal, Tras-os-Montes,
the small town of Bragança is dominated by a small
old fortified section. Buildings inside and outside the
walls are strikingly different from Spain with their whitewashed
exteriors.
Driving along the main road through the nearby village of
Meixedo, I had to stop for a cow and a farmer with a
mule cart full of hay.
The village of Monesinho is in the hilly national park of the same
name, with pleasant wildflowers.
Near Vila Real in the palace of Mateus (pictured on
labels of Mateus wine). Its garden has an interesting
tunnel made with carefully shaped cedar trees on each side.
